About

This blog is an extension of the Working Group in Medieval Sculpture 2012, an initiative hatched by Jean-Marie Guillouët (Univ. Nantes & INHA, Paris), Jack Hinton (Philadelphia Museum of Art), and Robert A. Maxwell (Univ. of Pennsylvania).

Over the course of 2012, the Working Group will bring together scholars and students engaged in the study of medieval sculpture.  Three conferences and museum study-days held in Paris, Kalamazoo (MI), and Philadelphia will allow participants to discuss and debate methodologies and approaches particular to the study of sculpture — issues related to media, technique, settings, and contexts.  You will find more information about the conferences elsewhere on this blog.  And for more information about the Working Group, click on Paris-Kalamazoo-Philadelphie.Présentation générale.

This website will include abstracts and excerpts of the papers, along with video and audio of some of the presentations.  Participants at the conferences are encouraged to supplement those materials on this website with their own commentaries and insights, in order to continue the discussion beyond the conferences themselves.  It is also hoped that anyone interested in medieval sculpture, whether scholar, student, or casual observer, will visit this site and participate in the conversations.
